Brent Breakthrough 2002!12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 6th May 2002 Liberal Democrats are claiming a historic breakthrough as Brent Councillors formally sign in on Wednesday. Liberal Democrats have doubled the size of their group from four to nine councillors. The result of this and other election losses means that the Labour Party no longer has any councillors representing Wembley. The new Liberal Democrat Group includes Chandu Patel (several times a candidate in Wembley) Chuni Chavda (former Conservative Councillor), mother and son Valerie and Daniel Brown as well as Vijay Shah, Bob Wharton, James Allie, Paul Lorber and Havard Hughes. Cllr Havard Hughes commented: "This is the largest Liberal Democrat group ever elected to Brent Council and means a sea change in politics in Brent. People see the Liberal Democrats as the true alternative opposition to the failed policies of new Labour. The people of Wembley appreciate that the Liberal Democrats work hard for them." "We want to end the neglect of Wembley and make Wembley regeneration a key priority. We will be campaigning for a comprehensive clean-up and for improvements to shopping and leisure facilities as well as better public transport." Cllr Lorber Commented: "We will be pushing the Labour controlled council for better services for Wembley" "For too long they have taken the support of the people of Wembley for granted. This result is a body blow to the Labour party in Brent."
