CRIME SHAME9.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 28th Jul 2003
Nearly three quarters of local people do not feel safe when they go out after dark a Lib Dem survey has revealed. The news comes on the same week as new crime statistics showing that violent crime has risen again in London. Local campaigner Sarah Teather said, "After six years of Labour rule, crime is still out of control. Violent crime, sexual offences and drug related crime are all up and local people want action." The survey of local people also showed that most people feel that crime is rising in our area. Labour run Brent Council was slammed by residents in the survey with not one person saying that they thought the Council was doing enough to tackle crime. Time for tough action Despite lots of tough talking, crime has rocketed under the last Conservative Government and has continued to rise steadily under Labour. Many people are saying it is time for real action to reclaim our streets from the criminals. Sarah Teather and local Lib Dems are campaigning for tough action to crack down on crime in our area. They want to see more police actually on patrol locally. Lib Dems are also calling for more measures to prevent crime. Sarah Teather said, "It is appalling that so many people are living in fear of crime. Words from politicians will not change this. We need to see real action on the streets through increased policing, improving streetlighting and better use of CCTV." Hundreds sign petition Hundreds of local people have already signed the Lib Dem petition calling for more police on patrol in our area. Sarah Teather is now asking all residents to sign the petition. Every extra signature will put more pressure on the government to act.
