Brent Misses Out On Crossrail

11.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 21st Jul 2003

The Government has decided that Crossrail will not pass through Brent. This will mean that local residents will miss out on quick rail links between East and West London.

Local Lib Dem campaigner Sarah Teather commented, "I am disappointed that local people will not benefit from this new rail line. The Government has taken a very long time to make a decision on this and even now nothing seems to be moving quickly."

In a blow for London's Olympic bid, the Government also revealed that the new rail line would not be ready by 2012. The omission of Brent from the scheme also means that links to the new Wembley Stadium will not be improved.

Sarah said, "I urge the Government to think again about including Brent in Crossrail. The improved link would be a great benefit to our area. It will also help tackle the expected transport problems around the new Wembley Stadium once it has opened in 2006."
