Labour Pick By-Election Candidate From Surrey

11.30.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Sat 23rd Aug 2003

Labour have controversially picked a Euro MP from Surrey as their candidate in the forthcoming Brent East by-election.

Robert Evans, who backed Tony Blair on the war in Iraq, is expected to face a tough fight to hold the Brent East Parliamentary seat. Latest figures show that the Lib Dems are gaining ground on Labour in Brent East.

Lib Dem campaigner Sarah Teather said, "People in Brent want an MP who will stand up for local people, not one of Blair's 'yes' men."
