Labour's Local Disgrace12.30.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Sun 24th Aug 2003
The state of many parts of Brent is a complete disgrace says local campaigner Sarah Teather. Many years of neglect under Labour has left almost every street in our area suffering from graffiti, litter or abandoned cars. Other problems include potholes, vandalised play areas and rundown sports facilities. Sarah Teather said, "It is a disgraceful situation. Residents are paying huge Council Tax bills to the Labour Council, but our streets remain in a dreadful state. I have launched a major campaign to get action to clean up Brent and restore pride in our area." Helped by local residents, Lib Dem campaigners are carrying out a street by street survey of our area to find out the problems in every street. They are demanding that the Labour run Council takes action. Sarah said, "I would like to thank local people for supporting my campaign. Local people deserve better. I will keep up the pressure on the Council to do its job and start cleaning up our area." Graffiti Action People who visit our area are often shocked by the amount of graffiti on our streets. Many local residents also feel that graffiti problems add to fear of crime in our area. Sarah Teather said, "Graffiti is blighting our area and the Council does not appear to be doing anything about it." Brent Lib Dems have recently launched a free 'Graffiti Action Pack' for local residents. The pack helps people to take action on graffiti in their street. Sarah said, "We want to work with residents, the Council and businesses to really tackle graffiti in Brent."
