Sarah Teather is concerned that over 8,000 Brent homes do not have smoke alarms

Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has today written to Brent Council Chief Executive Gareth Daniel to ask why over 8,000 Brent Housing Partnership Homes are not fitted with smoke alarms. The revelation follows a parliamentary question by the Brent East MP to the Deputy Prime Minister.
Smoke alarms are an important early-warning against household fires. The Brent East MP is concerned for the safety of many residents whose homes are not fitted with this basic life-saving safety device.
Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said:
"A smoke alarm is such a basic device which can be a life saver. The fire brigade consistently inform people of the importance of fitting a smoke alarm in their homes. Many fires can be dealt with before they reach fatal proportions with the installation of a smoke alarm. The Council must act swiftly to protect the safety of many residents in Brent."
The Brent East MP has also urged Brent residents who possess a smoke alarm to check that they are working properly.
The Liberal Democrat MP added:
"I would urge all Brent residents to check whether their smoke alarm is working. Often the batteries can run out without people realising. The importance of having a fully-working smoke alarm cannot be underestimated. It is a life-saver."
