LOCAL LIB DEM MP CALLS FOR GREATER POLICE PRESENCE TO TACKLE PRESS ROAD PROBLEMS2.31.03pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 26th Oct 2004
Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has met with Borough Police Commander Andy Bamber to discuss the problems of Press Road, Neasden. The area has been rife with anti-social behaviour problems. The local MP met with the police chief after a number of constituents contacted her about harassment some of which had racist aspects. Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said: "A number of constituents have contacted me regarding harassment on Press Road, they are in serious need of being rehoused. The levels of abuse they are receiving are totally unacceptable. I have asked the police to collate all their cases concerning Press Road, in order that an action plan be developed to restore community safety and confidence. It is clear that previous measures to tackle the problem of Press Road have not resolved the problems in the area or improved community safety." Nationally the local Liberal Democrat MP has called for more police on our streets. A Liberal Democrat Government would recruit 10,000 extra police. Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said: "To improve community safety we need more police in our community. I want to see more police patrolling the streets in areas like Press Road. The police are at their best when they are visibly working in our community. After seven years of Labour Government we have heard many tough words on crime but we have seen little in terms of action. Areas like Press Road are still plagued by crime and anti-social behaviour. The Government's solution is more legislation, mine and the Liberal Democrats is more police."
