Working to Make Brent Better

Statement from Sarah Teather MP following the Earthquake in Kashmir

2.41.07pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 10th Oct 2005

Following the news of the earthquake in Kashmir, Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said:

"Everyone's thoughts are with those who are in desperate need and those who have lost families and loved ones in Kashmir.

"I have spoken to constituents in Brent who fear for the safety of relatives and friends at this time. The people of Brent will no doubt rally around and support those who need our help.

"Just last week I was visiting the region, one of the most beautiful places in the world. I can only imagine the devastation that must have occurred to those small villages in the mountains and valleys where people are already living in deprived conditions.

"The people of Kashmir have already suffered through the long, historic tensions in the region. I hope that the Indian and Pakistani Governments will be able to forge closer relations out of this tragedy."

"We must do all we can to support those who have been affected by the earthquake. I would urge everybody to give generously to the appeals from charities working in the region."
