Everyone Can Do Their Bit To Stop Climate Change - Teather12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 15th Jun 2008
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather spoke to a large group of constituents over the weekend about working together to combat climate change. The meeting was organised by Sister Alexine Anderson, who came to lobby Sarah on climate change in parliament. She was so concerned that there was so little interest from Brent that she decided to organise a meeting to rally local people. Sarah spoke alongside Lorraine Skinner, who started Brent's first "Green Zone". Sarah and Lorraine presented three easy steps for people to make a difference: 1. Phone your energy company to find out about free energy saving schemes they may offer. 2. Keep a record of what you throw away this week. Is there anything you could recycle reuse or compost? 3. Grow a plant. Even if you don't have a garden you can still use any window sill. Local Brent East Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said: "Sometimes the threat of climate change seems so huge that people feel helpless. We wanted people to go away from this meeting understanding that there are real, practical steps that everyone can take on the environment, and not all of them are hard. "It's great to see Brent's churches getting involved, as the more people and groups who take this issue seriously the better. For my part, I will be urging the Government to bring forward a much firmer climate change bill, with tougher targets and proper accountability. "I am so grateful that Lorraine Skinner agreed to come and share some of her practical advice with other local people. Lorraine has really taken up the challenge of climate change and, even more impressively, has encouraged her neighbours to do the same. "Doing nothing is no longer an option. I hope that the hard work by local people here in Brent will persuade the Government that they must step up their efforts as well." Related Link:
