Brent's Unanimous Decision Sends Clear Message To Blears - Teather

Local MP Sarah Teather spoke against the Barnet Dump on behalf of campaigners in Dollis Hill

Liberal Democrat Brent East MP Sarah Teather has spoken up on behalf of local residents at a Brent planning committee meeting on the unpopular Barnet Dump proposals.

Following Sarah's intervention, the committee unanimously voted to oppose Barnet Council's plans to relocate a large waste re-processing plant next door to a residential area on Edgware Road. Brent Council's formal opposition to the scheme has sent a strong message to councillors in Barnet, who are next to consider the plans.

Sarah has now written to Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Hazel Blears, asking her to intervene. Planning law allows the government to intervene when a planning proposal will have a significant impact on residents from beyond the decision making borough.

Many Brent residents and local campaign groups, including Lib Dem Dollis Hill Councillor Alec Castle, have been furiously fighting against Barnet's plans. If approved, hundreds of extra lorries could pass homes in the Dollis Hill area every day.

Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"I was pleased to represent my constituents at this important planning committee. With Barnet Council trying to sweep aside the views of people in Brent, this was a vital opportunity for local residents to have their say.

"It is a huge victory for the campaign that the committee voted unanimously against plans that could see hundreds of extra lorries passing through a quiet residential area. Brent has now sent a very clear message to Barnet Council that they cannot dump their rubbish on our doorstep.

"A huge number of people set to be effected by this scheme are unable to hold Barnet Council to account for their plans. The Secretary of State must correct this democratic deficit by intervening and telling Barnet Council that they must do more to consult local residents in Brent."

Farina Begum, Secretary of Paddock Road Neighbourhood Watch and Residents Association, said:

"I am concerned that the proposed development will turn our area in to a rat run. As a mother of 3, it is quite scary to think huge trucks and lorries could be hurtling down our roads as a result of a dump being built on our doorstep. There are many young families and children in our area, the last thing we want is more pollution and an increase in vermin in our neighbourhood."

"I definitely support what our local MP Sarah is doing, and completely share her concerns over the proposed dump, as do many other local residents in the area."
